Do you accept readers photos?

February 17th, 2009

Yes, absolutely!  We encourage our readers to submit their favorite photos or video that they would like to share with the rest of our readers.

Keep in mind these helpful suggestions:

• Email or use the form below to submit photos in their original form. Edited photos will only be published under specific circumstances.

• Send us your very best image. Consider lighting, composition and how clear the photo is.

• Photos with inappropriate or offensive gestures or other elements will not be published online or in print.

• Color images of 1MB or larger work best (Keep images under 3 MB though).

• Please include daytime phone number as well as your email address in case we need to verify or obtain additional information.

How do your search engines work on your websites?

February 17th, 2009

We have two types of search engines, the first is our primary search engine located throughout The Daily Star and Cooperstown Crier websites.  The second search engine available is located under ‘Archive’ on the navigation bar of both websites. The second is a site specific Google Search engine that searches both our new and old websites for both The Daily Star and the Cooperstown Crier.

Searching by keyword is the primary way of using these search engines.  The more specific you are, the better your results will be when using the search engines.

An example of a specific search would be entering the full headline in the search engine.  The result will be stories with that headline or something similar.  Including quote around what you are searching for will make the search engine search for that exact phrase, not the individual components of that phrase.

An example of a non-specific search would be entering a couple words like “cats” or “dogs”.  Searching this way will result in long list of stories that had “cats” or “dogs” somewhere throughout the story.

If you have any other questions on how to use our search engines on our website, please contact The Daily Star webmaster at 607-432-1000 ext. 239 or by emailing him at webmaster@thedailystar.com.

I still see the old website design

February 16th, 2009

If you are still seeing the old website design, there is only one reason for it…You are probably looking at a story, photo or video from before our website redesign in September of 2007.

To make it easy for both our online readers and our staff, we moved our old website to old.thedailystar.com.  On this subdomain, all of our stories from August 2007 and before will be stored here in the same form as when they were first published.

All stories starting September 2007 will be formatted under our new website design.
