How do your search engines work on your websites?

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

We have two types of search engines, the first is our primary search engine located throughout The Daily Star and Cooperstown Crier websites.  The second search engine available is located under ‘Archive’ on the navigation bar of both websites. The second is a site specific Google Search engine that searches both our new and old websites for both The Daily Star and the Cooperstown Crier.

Searching by keyword is the primary way of using these search engines.  The more specific you are, the better your results will be when using the search engines.

An example of a specific search would be entering the full headline in the search engine.  The result will be stories with that headline or something similar.  Including quote around what you are searching for will make the search engine search for that exact phrase, not the individual components of that phrase.

An example of a non-specific search would be entering a couple words like “cats” or “dogs”.  Searching this way will result in long list of stories that had “cats” or “dogs” somewhere throughout the story.

If you have any other questions on how to use our search engines on our website, please contact The Daily Star webmaster at 607-432-1000 ext. 239 or by emailing him at webmaster@thedailystar.com.

I still see the old website design

Monday, February 16th, 2009

If you are still seeing the old website design, there is only one reason for it…You are probably looking at a story, photo or video from before our website redesign in September of 2007.

To make it easy for both our online readers and our staff, we moved our old website to old.thedailystar.com.  On this subdomain, all of our stories from August 2007 and before will be stored here in the same form as when they were first published.

All stories starting September 2007 will be formatted under our new website design.

Can you help me find information from ads recently published in one of your papers?

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Under most circumstances yes, we can help.  The key to helping you is the more information you have about the ad you are looking for, the better.   Ideally, if you had the publishing date and the name of advertiser, we will most likely find the ad you are looking for.

Print ads generally do not appear online.

If you would like assistance in finding an ad, please contact our Advertising Department or Customer Service Department by calling 607-432-1000.

You are also welcome to come to The Daily Star in person and look through our bound print editions or microfilm as well.

How can I find a story that already ran in the paper?

Monday, February 16th, 2009

You can call The Daily Star at 607-432-1000 between 9am and 5pm and ask for someone in the newsroom.  You will then be put in touch with the appropriate staff to help you.  Back copies are available for viewing in our library either in print or microfilm.  You may also be able to find a copy at your local library.

If you are looking for an article that already ran online, please use our search engine located on our homepage or by using the search engine located on our navigation bar under ‘Archive’.

For any additional questions, you may also email our librarian, Deb McCaffery at librarian@thedailystar.com.
